Battery Removal & Recycling
Proper removal and disposal of batteries from service is important for personal and environmental safety.
EPI provides all of the rigging equipment, and spill containment materials necessary for handling of heavier VRLA and flooded batteries, Once removed from service, the batteries are carefully prepped for shipment.
- Batteries are placed on approved pallets.
- Cardboard to protect the battery terminals to minimize the potential for electrical discharge (up to 50,000 amps possible).
- Pallets are "shrink-wrapped" and banded accordingly.
EPI arranges for disposal of batteries at EPA approved smelter facilities, where in turn they are recycled for their reusable materials:
- Lead: used for cell plate material and battery posts.
- Plastic: used to make the jars.
Special consideration is taken with NiCad batteries in particular due to the content of Cadmium, and in some instances, Mercury. These batteries are handled and disposed in accordance with very strict guidelines.
